State Fish

State Fish Detail
In 1932, a small fish market on the San Pedro wharf began contracting with local fishermen for their daily catch. Three enterprising brothers, Jack, Frank and Sam DeLuca, sold fresh seafood caught in Southern California waters to the wholesalers in Los Angeles, Monterey and San Francisco. State Fish Company was born.
The beginning was modest—small catches, limited facilities, long hours and hard work.
In 1946, Sam DeLuca, the youngest of the three brothers, took over the company’s leadership.  As seafood developed into an increasingly important food source, the company grew and added more boats to its fleet and developed the squid, mackerel, sardines, anchovies and bonito fishery in California, cultivating an industry that  attracted worldwide attention and popularity.
